Dubuque Man Pleads Guilty To Taking Jewelry From Elderly Mother And Sentenced

GAVEL COURT

A Dubuque man charged with stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry from his elderly mother and then selling them to pawn shops in Dubuque has entered a guilty plea and been sentenced on reduced charges.

52-year old Douglas Winner, who was originally charged with first degree theft against an older individual, recently pled guilty to 2nd degree theft. On Friday, Winner was sentenced to a suspended five year prison term and ordered to serve 3 years of probation.

In April 2024, police charged Winner following an investigation which began after his mother reported missing jewelry from her home. The 17 pieces of missing jewelry were valued at well over $10-thousand dollars and perhaps as much as 35-thousand. Police say their investigation showed the approximately 17 pieces of jewelry were sold to two different Dubuque pawn shops.
