Dubuque School Board Votes To Close Hoover Elementary

Last night, the Dubuque Community School Board voted unanimously to close Hoover Elementary School at the end of the current school year.

292 students currently attend Hoover Elementary, down from 379 students in the 2019-2020 school year. The nearly 23 percent enrollment decrease is the largest decline of any district elementary school over that time.

Superintendent Amy Hawkins says closing Hoover will save the district one million dollars annually.

Carver, Irving, Kennedy, and Table Mound elementary schools are expected to absorb Hoover’s nearly 300 students while keeping class sizes below 30 students.

Hawkins says the district expects to keep the more than 40 staff members using vacancies at other district schools.

The district plans to keep Hoover and use the property as a flex space.
