Chronic absenteeism rates drop 6% at Dubuque schools after district updates attendance policy

Our coverage partner KCRG reports chronic absenteeism rates are dropping in the Dubuque Community School District as staff implement new attendance policies in accordance with state law.

Defined as a student missing 10 percent or more of the school year, the district reports 20% of students were chronically absent in the first half of this school year. In fall 2023, 26% of students were chronically absent.

During the 2024 Iowa Legislative Session, state lawmakers passed a bill aimed at reducing the number of school days students misses.
