A Dubuque County home has been destroyed by fire this morning. The Dubuque County Sheriff reports the fire started shortly before 5:30 at the home owned by Lois Klein at 19-998 Hochrein Road near Sherrill.
Fire crews from the Sherrill, Holy Cross and Asbury fire departments were sent to the residence after Klein awoke to the smell of smoke and realized the home and nearby machine shed were on fire. Officials say she was able to leave the home uninjured, but a dog died in the fire.
Damage to the home and machine shed is estimated at 550-thousand dollars. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
