For the first time in school history, Wahlert High School has a state football champion. Yesterday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls the Golden Eagles capped off a perfect 13-0 season with the perfect ending with a 49-14 victory over Humboldt in the Class 3A state title game. The Golden Eagles used an impressive offensive attack with 211 yards rushing and 280 yards passing along with terrific defense. After allowing Humboldt an 80 yard touchdown run which tied the game at 7, the defense held the Wildcats to only 191 yards the rest of the game. Marshall says the second quarter was where they began to take over.
Wahlert senior Tom Scherr caught 5 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another summed up the team’s feelings of being state champions.
Wahlert became the second state high school football champion which was Hempstead in 1979.
