Last night the Dubuque City Council started the process or exploring whether or not to modify an ordinance allowing dogs and other pets in more areas including expanding the number of parks where leashed pets can be.
Currently pets are allowed in all city parks with the exceptions of three of the most visited Eagle Point, Murphy, and Dubuque Arboretum.
Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanaugh
Cavanaugh says it appears other communities have a more pet friendly policy.
During the Public Input portion of the meeting last night, Jenna Hirtz, Executive Director at the Arboretum voice several concerns about allowing dogs there.
The Mayor agreed with Hirtz that the Arboretum and Marshall Park should still be off limits to pets. The Mayor and Council also said they would like to hear the Park and Recreation commission’s recommendations and also encourage citizens to make their thoughts known.
In other action at the city council meeting last night:
- Council members voted unanimously to approve $328-thousand dollars to resurface the east end of Keymont Drive with new permeable paver bricks.
- Also they voted to approve a $22.8 million dollar contract with Tricon Construction Group for the Old Mill Road lift station and force main sewer project.
