City of Dyersville threatens Dubuque County with legal action over stolen $524,000 ARPA funds

NEWS IOWA

Our coverage partner KCRG reports the City of Dyersville is threatening to take legal action against Dubuque County unless the city receives the nearly 525-thousand dollars in American Rescue Plan Act funds stolen by cyber scammers.

In December, the City of Dyersville was supposed to get the money for renovations at the Field of Dreams, but the funds were fraudulently directed to a third party.

At this week’s Dubuque County Board of Supervisors meeting, a group of people called for “accountability” in the theft.

The investigation into the stolen funds started in February. Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy said the investigation is still active and includes the FBI. Kennedy noted the money was transferred to cryptocurrency, making it nearly impossible to track down.

The letter from Dyersville’s attorney blamed the Dubuque County Auditor for wire transferring the funds to an unfamiliar bank account without asking any questions or contacting the city.
