Wahlert Baseball Nips Central Dewitt In 3A State Quarterfinals

Wahlert Golden Eagles

The top ranked Wahlert Golden Eagles baseball team survived and advanced at the State High School Baseball Tournament yesterday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids with a 1-0 walk off victory over 8th seed Central Dewitt.  The lone run scored in the bottom of the 7th when senior Brevin Hawkinson dashed home from third on a wild pitch. Hawkinson had advanced to 3rd by running after a dropped third strike and then throw to first, sliding safely under the tag to put him in position for the game winner with two outs.  Despite an early error the Golden Eagles played some great defense and starter Foti Rigopoulous went all 7 innings, allowing only three hits, striking out 5 and walking none. Wahlert head coach Kory Tuescher.

This evening Wahlert (34-9) will play in the 3A semi-finals against (33-10) Sioux City Bishop Heelan. Tuecher says he’s more focused on his team than the next opponent.

Cummer, playing right field was injured in a collision in the outfield during a fly ball out in the 6th inning.  Game time is schedule for 5 o’clock. The winner plays Friday evening for the 3A State Championship.

You can hear the action this evening on the Radio Dubuque APP, radiodubuque.com and AM 1370 KDTH, pregame around 4:40.
