The city of Chicago turns the Chicago River green for Saint Patrick’s Day each year:
A Jackson County creek and the Maquoketa River near Maquoketa accidentally turned a red color on Tuesday. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a 330 gallon tote of wood mulch dye was punctured on a semi-truck at the Kwik Star on David Street near the Highway 61 exit and entered nearby Prairie Creek via a storm drain and turned the creek red. Prairie Creek empties into the Maquoketa River and the river was expected to take on a red color as well.
The DNR says impacts to fish were not expected, no dead fish were observed. Clean-up continued yesterday with DNR staff assisting.
