Emergency crews were busy Sunday with a handling a major disruption in power and natural gas service in the University Avenue hill area of Dubuque.
Dubuque Police say it all started shortly before noon at the intersection of Walnut Street and University and was caused by a power line falling on top of a car, catching the vehicle on fire. Authorities say the fire was so hot it compromised an underground gas line which caused a leak forcing several evacuations and forcing authorities to block off traffic in the area for several hours while staff from the city of Dubuque Public Works Department, Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy and members of the Dubuque police and fire departments were there for several hours.
There were no injuries reported, police say a nearby home suffered heat damage from the car fire.
The power outage created problems here at the Radio Dubuque studios causing our radio stations to be off the air while technical issues were dealt with as a result of the disruption.
Police say what caused of the downed power line is still under investigation.
