A southwest Wisconsin man working as an anesthetist has been sentenced to three months in prison for diverting fentanyl and illegally accessing patient records at hospitals in Platteville and Dubuque.

42-year old Ian Lindsey of Mineral Point pleaded guilty in November to several charges and was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

In his plea agreement, Lindsey admitted to diverting a significant amount of fentanyl and other drugs from the Platteville hospital. Lindsey was fired in 2017 and then a few years later went to work at a hospital in Dubuque. From October 2022 to at least January 2023, he falsely stated in at least six patients’ records that he had provided fentanyl for pain when he had not done so. He also diverted fentanyl from nearly 50 patients.

The Department of Justice says Lindsey has a serious criminal history dating back to 2004, which includes four convictions for drunk driving in Wisconsin.  After prison, he will served six months of home confinement and a fine of $5,000 followed by a three-year term of supervised release following the prison term.
