Marquette Catholic Comes Up Short Of State Crown

Bellevue Marquette Catholic dug out of a hole twice but the second time the Defenders ran out of time and lost 59-57 to Madrid in the Class 1A boys basketball state championship game last night at  Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Defenders struggled shooting in the first half,  trailing 9-0 early in the first quarter before putting their first points on the board over halfway into the quarter.  Madrid opened up a 13 point lead halfway through the second and led 31-21 at half.  

Marquette Catholic found their shooting touch in the 3rd quarter on a 13-oh run and took a 3 point lead. The score was tied 41-41 after 3 quarters. Madrid opened up a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter which the Defenders couldn’t come back from and suffered their 2nd loss of the season.  

Jacob Litterer scored a team high 19, Spencer Roeder who was named to the all tournament team scored 13.  Marquette settled for the state runner up trophy back to back seasons and the third time in school history. Madrid went undefeated in winning their first state championship.
