Wahlert Advances To Championship At State Basketball Tournament

The Wahlert Girls Basketball team used a great offensive performance and suffocating defensive effort in advancing to a state championship game for the first time in school history defeating 3rd ranked Williamsburg 52-34 at Wells Fargo Arena. 

Wahlert jumped out to a 14-3 first quarter lead and never looked back to run their record to 21-and-4 on the season.  Wahlert led by as many as 25 points late in the 3rd quarter and coasted into Friday night’s championship game.

The 2nd ranked  Golden Eagles were led by senior Claire Lueken with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Wahlert shot an impressive 5 of 9 from the 3 point line for 56 percent shooting 43 percent for the game overall, and defensively limited Williamsburg to only 30 percent shooting and only 27 percent from the 3 point line. Wahlert also dominated on the glass 38-25 with 14 offensive rebounds. 

Wahlert will meet top ranked 25-1 Mount Vernon Friday night at 8 o’clock for the state title and once again you can hear the action on AM 1370, The Radio Dubuque App and radiodubuque.com. Pregame will be at 7:45.
