Schools, health officials report surge in illness in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is seeing an increase in flu cases. And dozens of schools are also seeing 10 percent or more of students out for illness.

In the past week, 73 schools reported 10 percent or more students missing for illness. That includes schools in Dubuque, Jones and Delaware Counties. Iowa saw 11 schools fall into this category the previous week.

Last year at this time, Iowa was only seeing three schools with high rates of students out for illness.

Positive flu tests went from about 17 percent to 25 percent in the past week.

RSV cases also increased in the past week in Iowa to about 11 percent of tests coming back positive. Covid-19 activity remained low with positive tests decreasing from 9 to 6 percent.
