The Dubuque city council is raising its fees for electric vehicle charging stations in public parking areas.
The new fee will increase from $0.17 per kilowatt hour to $0.25 per kilowatt hour.
Officials say the increase is needed to recover state taxes and fees as well as more people using the stations. Since July 2023 to December 2024, city leaders say they’ve seen a 128 percent increase in usage at public charging stations. The city also approved a $2 per hour overstay fee for vehicles that have been charged at least 85%. These changes are set to go into effect January 27.
In other business last night, the council unanimously approved site plans and the $28-point-2 million dollars in construction costs for a new pumping station at the outlet of the Bee Branch.
The city received $15-point-6 million dollars in federal grants to help replace the 70 year old pumps. Most of the rest of the cost will be absorbed by just over 8 million dollars in local sales tax revenue, over two million dollars in storm water fees.
