Dubuque Officers Involved In Shooting During Arrest Cleared

Police

The Dubuque County Attorney has ruled the two Dubuque Police officers involved in a shooting while attempting to make an arrest on Christmas Eve were justified in their actions and will be allowed to return to duty. Following review of a DCI investigation, Scott Nelson ruled there was no criminal wrong doing and the case is closed.

Police were called to the area of the 500 block of Nevada Street on a report 16-year old Lorenzo Cruz was threatening another person and was possibly in possession of a gun and he had warrants for his arrest. When officers attempted to arrest Cruz, he threatened them with a knife and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Authorities say he then came at officers Dylan Doerges and Stephanie Wehr who both fired at him after an attempt to use a Taser failed.

Cruz was hospitalized after being wounded in the shoulder and arm, following treatment he was arrested.
