More details about the officer-involved shooting in Dubuque on Christmas Eve have been released.
The teenager wounded in the incident and officers involved have been identified by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation who is handling the investigation.
The DCI says 16-year-old Lorenzo Cruz was shot at by officers Dylan Doerges and Stephanie Wehr after Cruz threatened them with a knife in the area of the 500 block of Nevada Street while they were trying to arrest him on active warrants.
The update from DCI says the officers gave Cruz “several commands to drop the knife,” which were not followed. One of the officers used a taser to try to stop Cruz, but it was reportedly ineffective and the officers each fired their on-duty weapons. Cruz was struck twice and taken to University of Iowa Hospitals for treatment. The update says he was released from the hospital and taken to the Dubuque County Jail and is waiting for a preliminary hearing this Monday in Dubuque County District Court.
Officers Doerges and Wehr remain on critical incident leave while the incident remains under investigation.
