Join a First Day Hike on New Year’s Day

Iowa DNR

The Iowa DNR says the best way to spend New Year’s Day is to take a First Day Hike in an Iowa state park or forest!

More than 40 parks are hosting either a guided group hike or suggesting a self-guided hike.  Once again the Mines of Spain State Park in Dubuque is hosting one…Park Manager Elli Lineburg.

The event begins at 12 noon tomorrow outside the EB Lyons Nature Center at the Park and the longest hike could last up to 90 minutes. Lineburg says after the hike you can stick around for refreshments.

No registration is necessary and the event is free. Lineburg who is also Park Manager at Bellevue State Park says instead of a first day hike event, there is a self-guided scavenger hunt through January 6th to search for gnomes hidden along the trails. For more information visit the Friends of Bellevue State Park Facebook Page.

Other First Day Hikes around the region tomorrow will be at the Maquoketa Caves, Pikes Peak, Wapsipinicon and Yellow River State Forest. For more info on those hikes see the Iowa DNR Website.
