Dubuque city leaders are releasing more details about what led up to a shooting on Christmas Eve. It happened near the intersection of University Avenue and Alpine Street. Police say they were called to the scene for reports of a 16-year-old with active adult warrants out for his arrest. Officers say they told the teenager to drop the knife, he refused and told them not to touch him and to get away. One officer tried to tase him but was unsuccessful. That’s when they say the 16-year-old ran toward two officers with the knife. Two officers shot back, hitting the teen in his arm and shoulder. Police say the suspect is recovering and the two officers who fired their guns have been placed on critical incident leave. The juvenile who was wounded is in custody and faces multiple charges related to Tuesday’s incident and existing warrants from another incident for which the juvenile is being charged as an adult. The case is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations. The city says it expects D-C-I to release more information about the incident soon. Additionally, an internal investigation is being conducted to determine if any policies were violated by officers, as is standard protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
