In a major announcement today from the University of Dubuque, the school says it plans to open the first new medical school in Iowa in Over 125 Years.

In a ceremony this morning which included Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley, and Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanaugh along with other community and area leaders, U-D President Travis Frampton announced the proposed John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine which is being spearheaded by a $60-million dollar gift from the Butler’s. $25 million dollars of the gift is being donated for endowed scholarships. The gift is one of the largest in the school’s history.

The university says it is considering a few downtown Dubuque sites to serve as home for the school with a target date of the inaugural class in 2028. It’s projected to add another 400 students at U-D each school year.

The hiring of the inaugural dean for the proposed college of osteopathic medicine will begin immediately.

University leaders say the medical school will bring needed support to the physician workforce as well as provide an economic benefit to the region.
