In a major announcement today from the University of Dubuque, the school says it plans to open the first new medical school in Iowa in Over 125 Years.
In a ceremony this morning which included Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley, and Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanaugh along with other community and area leaders, U-D President Travis Frampton announced the proposed John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine which is being spearheaded by a $60-million dollar gift from the Butler’s. $25 million dollars of the gift is being donated for endowed scholarships. The gift is one of the largest in the school’s history.
The university says it is considering a few downtown Dubuque sites to serve as home for the school with a target date of the inaugural class in 2028. It’s projected to add another 400 students at U-D each school year.
The hiring of the inaugural dean for the proposed college of osteopathic medicine will begin immediately.
