Television station KWWL is reporting the attorney for former Dubuque priest Leo Riley has filed a motion to dismiss three civil cases brought against him in Charlotte County, Florida that deal with sexual abuse allegations in Dubuque.
In October, three individual’s filed lawsuits against Riley in Florida, where he currently resides.
Riley’s attorneys argue the cases should be dismissed due to expired statue of limitations. They say since the statue of limitations has expired in Iowa where the alleged actions took place, it should also apply in Florida under the states borrowing statue.
Earlier this year, five criminal charges were previously filed in Dubuque alleging sexual abuse of young altar boys in the 1980’s when Riley was a priest in Dubuque. Those charges were dismissed in July due to the statue of limitations expiring.
