A Georgia man has been sentenced for his role in a check cashing scheme in the Dubuque area in 2022.
25-year old Brandon Cooperwood was recently sentenced in Dubuque County District Court to serve 12 years in prison. Cooperwood pled guilty to charges of identity theft, solicitation to commit a felony and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Cooperwood and three others were arrested after an investigation determined they were running a scheme which paid people to cash counterfeit checks at local banks in November 2022.
The three others arrested also received sentences in the case.
