Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency Awarded Up to $4 Million for Battery Recycling Project

Solid Waste

The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency has been selected to receive up to $4 million in federal funds to construct a new battery recycling and collection hub within its future customer convenience center. The project was one of seven selected in the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), through the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC), is partnering with states and local governments to expand battery recycling and make it more accessible for consumers, reducing waste and improving the nation’s battery recycling landscape.

Currently, battery collection at the landfill is limited by aging infrastructure requiring residents to schedule appointments and package batteries individually. The new facility will streamline the process by allowing drop-offs during without the need for pre-packaging, enhancing convenience and reducing packaging waste.
