Galena Police Make Arrest In Arson Fire And Stabbing Incident

The Galena Police Department has made an arrest and released more details regarding an intentionally set fire inside a home early Wednesday morning.

Police say 41-year old Ciriaco Oliva-Banegas has been charged with aggravated arson, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property.

Authorities say their investigation shows Oliva-Banegas started a fire in the basement and kitchen of the home at 627 Franklin Street and then stabbed Ismael Sanchez-Xalamihua and then ran away. Sanchez-Xalamihua had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. A woman in the home at the time who is pregnant also was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Oliva-Banegas is being held in the Jo Daviess County Jail awaiting a hearing on Monday.

Firefighters from Galena, Menominee Dunleith, and Hazel Green all assisted in fighting the fire.
