Ferocious Storms Batter Tri-State Area

Yesterday evening a line of severe storms brought extreme winds and heavy rain in the Tri-States area doing some significant damage throughout Eastern Iowa, Southwest Wisconsin, and Northwest Illinois.

Winds of 102 miles per hour were reported in the New Vienna area in Dubuque County and also near Dickeyville in Grant County. At least two structures in the Kieler, Wisconsin are had roofs taken off including the Village Bar.

Storm sirens sounded in the city of Dubuque due to winds clocked in excess of 80 miles per hour with at least 1 inch of rain reported near Bunker Hill Golf Course in less than an hour. Much heavier rains were recorded in northwestern Dubuque and northeastern Delaware County where a Flash Flood Warning was issued.

Dubuque County Emergency Management says so far damage reports in the county have been confined to widespread reports of tree limbs down and power outages. Aliant Energy reported just over 6400 customers in Dubuque County lost power for several hours, and this morning Aliant says just over 26-hundred still remain without power.

As the storms moved east into northern Illinois, the Chicago area saw multiple tornado warnings, wind and drenching rain. Nearly 390,000 customers were left without power in northern Illinois. The National Weather Service in Chicago had to take cover for a time and later reported extensive damage in the city.
